Jamaica: New Destination for Deer Hunters?

Jamaica has influence popular culture many times over the decades: Reggae music. Bob Marley. Blue Mountain Coffee. What’s next?

That’s right, the West Indies island known for its tropical weather might soon be the next big thing when it comes to deer hunting. That’s because the island is suddenly awash with an invasive species — namely a wild population of about 6,000 white-tailed deer. American Thomas McIntyre, a well-known and well-traveled outdoor writer from Wyoming, is seeking permission to bring hunters to Jamaica to hunt deer and help keep the population in check.

McIntyre’s mission was outlined earlier this week in an article published by The Sunday Gleaner.

Jamaica is in the West Indies, which is an archipelago of islands between southeast United States andnorthern South America. The island is in the Northern and Western Hemispheres, located at latitude 17 degrees North (approximately), and between longitude 77 and 79 degrees West. It is surrounded by the Caribbean sea.

The island spans 4,244 square miles and is home to a human population of 2.89 million.
