Deer & Deer Hunting Contributor Wins Top Writing Honors

Deer & Deer Hunting contributor and outdoor writer Steve Sorensen won the top “Excellence in Craft” award from the Pennsylvania Outdoor Writers Association May 19, for an article titled “The Ultimate Hunting Goal: Building Lifelong Hunters.” The article was published in the September 2018 issue of Deer and Deer Hunting.

Brad Isles, Awards Program Chair and POWA Chairman of the Board, presents “The Best of the Best” award to Steve at the Pennsylvania Outdoor Writers Association annual awards banquet May 19, 2019.

To be eligible for this award, Sorensen had to win first place in one of 28 “Excellence in Craft” categories. He won in the category “Pass It On” for the article which most effectively promotes passing on the love and appreciation of the outdoors. From those 28 first place winners, “The Ultimate Hunting Goal” was recognized as “The Best of the Best,” an award sponsored by the National Rifle Association.

“The Ultimate Hunting Goal” is about a mentorship program in the Allentown, PA, schools called “Camp Compass” led by teacher John Annoni. The program mentors students in hunting and conservation, giving them first-hand exposure to the significant role hunters play in wildlife conservation in North America.

“To be recognized at this level,” Sorensen said, “being a good writer isn’t enough. You also need great material. John Annoni, the inner-city school teacher who has developed the most innovative program connecting public school students to the world of hunting, provided an important story I simply relayed to the readers. I couldn’t have done it without this outstanding teacher, and it’s a privilege to know him.”

Sorensen is writes regularly for several national and regional magazines, and contributes to various blogs that cover hunting topics including Havalon Knives, as well as his own “Mission: Hunter.” His newspaper column, “The Everyday Hunter®,” appears bi-weekly in the Jamestown Gazette and the Forest Press. He also speaks frequently at sportsman’s shows and church-sponsored sportsman’s banquets throughout the United States.

Previously Sorensen won the “Best of the Best” award in 2017. In 2015 and 2018 he won the national “Pinnacle Award” for outdoor journalism from the Professional Outdoor Media Association. For more information about Steve, his writing and his speaking, go to www.EverydayHunter.com.
