Nugent: The Lessons of the Wild Never End

Are you immersed in this hunting lifestyle or what? I mean really wallowing in the Great Spirit of the Wild as an integral nature player?

I’m talking all year long, not just during the inescapable predator siren call of the wild and dreamy sensual overload of our favorite fall and winter seasons.

Well I’m here to tell you that I am indeed immersed in the ways of the wild like I mean it, full-time, nonstop, eternally, terminally, gungho, double live Gonzo, obsessed, shnookered, gaffed, strangled, over the top, nuts, hooked, owned, blathering, out of body, addicted, stream of consciousness, over the rainbow entrenched in all things great outdoors wildlife beyond Zen.

And I like it!

Sure, first and foremost I am husband, father, grandpa, bandmate, neighbor, fulltime American experimenter in self-government hellraiser as God and our founding fathers intended all real Americans to be, but Lord have mercy do I crave this glorious beyond the pavement outdoor boogie-woogie with mucho gusto or what!

It is no mystery how or why I ended up as a Texas resident, for it is here in this great state with the most real we the people individual freedoms that an outdoor junkie can live life to the fullest.

We have year-round hunting, fishing, trapping, science based hands-on nature participation, which of course is why the best hunting in North America is found right here in the Lone Star paradise.

For example, we have incredible fawn survival because we can wage war on fawn killing vermin, while at the same time celebrate a thriving population of coyotes, bobcat and mountain lions.

Everybody knows how destructive the out of control wild hog problem is, but on private property we actually enjoy and succeed in the always fun unlimited management methods we employ. And of course there is nothing on the mesquite smoker more delicious than free-range wild pork.

Hunting families from all over the world come to Texas to enjoy the fun, sport, meat, trophy perfection of year-round hunting the dazzling variety of exotic critters that run free range all over the state.

Just last week I was having the time of my life with my buddies in the stunning Hill Country around Leakey, where I was fortunate enough to snipe a gaggle of wild pigs, a gorgeous blackbuck antelope and a magnificent trophy axis stag with my suppressed GA Precision .308.

Every day afield, each critter encounter, every hunt and every kill were as challenging, thrilling and exciting as my traditional Michigan swampland whitetail hunting for the last 60 plus years.

That I was able to experience all that I cherish in the month of April, and will continue to enjoy throughout the entire year, represents a happiness that I could have never imagined.

Locked in mortal rock-n-roll hand to hand combat in the recording studio the previous few weeks with my amazing band creating a throttling electronic soundtrack was equally exhilarating, challenging, demanding, adventurous and gratifying, just much louder!

My killer bandmates Greg Smith and Jason Heartless are top level, world-class musical virtuosos and create a thundering sonic groove-fest that every guitar player dreams of. Being a united force of one with the pulse of each song we crank takes a super-animal level of awareness, dedication and communication that rivals any collaborative endeavor known to man.

So to is the demand of oneness that my SpiritWild VidCamDude Kris and I must perfect in our treestand or deer blind. To my liking and understanding, we must settle into a soaring, out of body Samurai state of mind as one to make a kill. Overcoming the miraculous radar of hard-pressured, escape-wired game animals is no small feat, and a successful hunter must be totally focused on reading the actual spirit of the animal by returning to the purest primal impulses of life itself.

The best hunting is truly transcendental.

So as I run my SpiritWild Ranch trapline and hunt squirrels with my dogs Happy and Sadie each day as spring and summer move along, I gear up for another dream rock-n-roll tour across America, while at the same time remain in deep touch with my predator instincts and duties.

No matter where you might live, there is something, somewhere in the great outdoors calling your name. The real lucky ones will get to Texas at some point to really get it on, but with thought and genuine improvise, adapt and overcome priorities, the Great Spirit of the Wild predator lessons are out there for us all to enjoy and learn from.

If a goofy guitar player can do it, anybody can! See you all on Facebook. There is a killer Spirit of the Wild techno campfire there waiting for you.
